    Manual Handling Risk Assessment

    The following factors will increase the risk potential:
    a. The more often a task is carried out.
    b. The heavier a load is.
    c. The greater the irregularity of the load.
    d. The greater the distance the lead is to be carried, lifted or lowered.
    e. The greater the extremes of temperature (hot/cold) or sharpness of the load.
    f. The physical abilities of the individual.

    The Task:

    What is the task being undertaken?

    1. Are the contents of the load secure?

    2. Is the surface of the load, hot cold or sharp?

    3. Is the load to be carried by hand?

    4. Does the task involve twisting?

    5. Is the load to be pushed/pulled?

    6. Does the employee need to bend?

    7. Is the load likely to move suddenly?

    8. Is the load difficult to hold or grasp?

    9. Is there a risk of injury from the load?

    10. Is the load an irregular shape

    11. How many times per day is the task carried out?

    12. What is the approximate weight of the load?

    13. Distance to be lifted or lowered?

    14. How much reach is required?

    15. What distance is the load carried?

    16. Is access restrictive?

    17. Does the task require more than one person?

    18. Does the task involve climbing with the load?

    19. Have any injuries occurred doing the task in the past 12 months?

    The Environment

    20. Is the floor space inadequate or unclean?

    21. Is the floor slippery?

    22. Is the layout of the work area poor?

    23. Are there any obstructions to a good lift?

    24. Does the ambient temperature affect the task?

    25. Is the standard of lighting poor?

    26. Could adverse weather conditions increase the risk of injury?

    The Employee

    27. Are the employees trained or untrained in lifting techniques?

    28. Are any of the employees unsuitable for the task? (Pregnant Women)

    29. Do employees frequently perform this task?

    30. Are employees trained in lifting/handling techniques?

    31. Safety Equipment (is it suitable for the job)?
